Lightning Strike 12/4 Walnut Slabs - Set Number 246576

This walnut tree was struck by lightning and has a large scar on one face. We cut straight into the scar and slabs 1, 2, and 3 show the decay caused by the as-hot-as 54,000 degree electrical bolt. The decay shows some insect holes, voids where the tree healed over itself, and drastic color changes. Pieces 4 and 5 are beautifully clear walnut slabs. Between pieces 6 and 7 we found an I-bolt threaded into the tree with two links of metal chain... we cut right through the chain. The metal only shows in one face each of the slabs, the back faces are clear. Pieces 8 and 9 are completely clear. The photos of this log show color variation which is due to the sawn pieces sitting for a couple days while we repaired the saw after hitting the metal chain. Overall this is a fantastic log.

The back face of Piece 6 was planed to flatten the miscut due to striking metal. The eyebolt is protruding above the surface about 1/8". What a cool detail... Anyone can screw an eyebolt into a flitch for effect, but when it's done a lifetime ago it becomes part of the tree and can be seen in the grain pattern.
