November 2008

Steamed Ash # 197988 .... with Inspiring Figure ....

The selection for the month of November represents some of the most amazing quirks of nature we've run across in a long time. This ash log has been steamed, resulting in a beautiful even golden brown color, but the most spectacular thing about it is its crazy, complex grain. It is hard to imagine what sort of fluke in the normal growth pattern of this tree caused it to go so "creative". The flat sawn wood shown in the images below indicate merely a hint of the classic cathedral pattern we would expect to see in a typical flat sawn cut. Instead, take a good look at what nature has treated us with: the grain is freely swirling and looping its way through the open oval images. Whether you describe it as waves, or ripples, or cascades it is spectacular in its uniqueness!

And look below for even more interesting images. The center photo represents yet another part of the flat cut wood showing a continuation of its remarkable grain. This particular piece has been "watered" to represent the incredible depth that will emerge once the wood is treated with its final finish. The pictures flanking the center-cut wood in the middle photo below show some of the "rift" or quarter sawn wood. Typically these cuts contain very straight even grain, but close inspection of the photos will show the persistence of the undulating, wave-like motion that continues throughout this tree. It brings to mind the fluttering of a flag..... What could be a more symbolic wind-down to the political campaign we have just experienced!

The character of this wood becomes even more special when you look at the reconstructed log. The swirls of the grain pattern add interest not only to the top surfaces of the wood, but can be seen working their way through the thicknesses of all the edges.

We are really excited about this selection. Ash is a species we rarely highlight, but this particular gem is more than worthy of the attention we give to our item-of-the-month. We are proud to be able to offer it to you.
