GREY ELM - super wide !!

Two sets from the same special log!
Grey Elm, also known as American Elm, is a species we rarely find here at HORIZON, but we ran across a dandy log and were really happy with how it cut out so we decided to feature it here for you. Back in the 1960's most of the American Elm species was decimated by the Dutch Elm disease. This particular tree somehow managed to survive the blight, but now, nearly 50 years later it was the victim of a windfall and had to be harvested. This is probably one of the last chances to create a legacy from the once majestic species that commonly graced the forests throughout the eastern part of North America.
Like Oak and Ash, Elm is a somewhat porus wood with an open coarse grain. It's interlocking growth pattern makes drying particularly challenging..... our success here is a good tribute to the HORIZON kiln masters who were able to run this thru our drying process with satisfactory results. There is a small amount of twisting in the set, a testimony of mother nature's persistance, but for the most part the wood has dried quite nicely. One of the most noteworthy features of American Elm is it's bendability. It also has a very pleasing grain pattern. Grey Elm's uniqueness makes this selection a real find.
