| By the virtue of its normal growth habit, Black Walnut tends to be a rather "limb-y" tree. With limbs, come knots. Walnut typically has its fair share of knots which often create a woodworker's challenge. In fact knots are so inherent in walnut that the NHLA grade takes them into consideration. This tree grew straight and tall. We were able to obtain an impressive 12 feet in length of beautiful, clear material. Hardly a knot to be found. This selection is not only nearly knot-free, but also boasts some impressively wide widths...one flitch is nearly 19 inches. The log has been sawn to a 12/4 thickness. HOLY COW, we really mean it when we say this is some dandy wood! |
During the cutting of this log, our alert sawyer realized a split was opening up on the third flitch indicating the wood was under some tension. In order to minimize the pressure on the log, he decided to carefully lay it down and quartersaw the remaining half. The result are some beautiful, solid and stable rift and quartersawn half flitches. |
