This is one of our personal favorite "Items of the Month" … It is very difficult finding clear walnut, much less clear walnut that is absolutely covered from end to end and edge to edge in tight maple-like fiddleback curl. If there was ever a case where photos do not do the wood justice this is it. We didn’t want to surface the boards in order to keep the thickness at the maximum, leaving full possibilities to the eventual wood worker. As a result the photos are not as great as they might be.....but in typical HORIZON style we do our utmost to perserve the wood at its best quality. We are content to sacrifice great pictures in order to maintain great wood!
Quite possibly the curliest walnut log we have come across. There have been a couple that
were close or equals… but this one is up near the top!

Pieces 1 – 3 are in sequence. Pieces 4 – 6 are in sequence. Piece 6 could net wide curly quartersawn boards or used full width as there is some pith on the back face. Pieces 7 and 8 are wide curly quartersawn boards.
You can even see the curl on the edges of the log. Often happens with cherry and maple, but not so much in walnut! Not just is this log heavily covered in curl, but the fiddlebacking is uniform and consistant throughout. This is the type of curl that blends well throughout a piece and can really add to a design. This is wood that a piece of furniture could be designed around.
Bundled up and ready to move......but hey, take a look at the figured cherry standing in the background. Now that's some pretty impressive stuff too!!
