This special selection offers so much variety it is hard to know where to start describing it...so we will go with the most eye-catching feature first: some very interesting clusters of pin knots scattered throughout the upper half of the log. These abberations in the grain make for some spectacular character. To add even more intrigue, the surrounding straight grain wood contains beautiful, natural swirls that tend to encompass the clusters. The flitch is not overwhelmed with the pin knot groups, but they are scattered with a greater concentration in the outer cut and diminishing in quantity toward the center. The hefty 6/4 thickness of the wood has been surfaced 1/8" on this portion of the log to highlight the impact of the pin knots.
.....and if the pin knots are not enough to make this selection special, consider its other great features. Pieces 7 , 8 and 15 , 17 are the center pieces. They contain some wonderful loose figure and one straight edge. Beautiful quartersawn wood.
The remaining half of the log, pieces 9 through 12, represent clear, extra-wide flitches. The wood is nearly 99% defect free, its only flaws being a touch of pith and a center knot on flitch # 12.

A close look at the photos of pieces 1 through 6 will reveal some very staight end checks. Reductions in measurement have been made to compensate. In addition, piece 3 has a hairline crack down the center. These cracks could actually be blessings in disguise. They are nearly in the absolute center of the boards, perfect places to rip and rejoin the pieces for increased stability in table tops (if using full width). Because the boards are SO wide careful splitting and reattaching will not only be very difficult to ever notice with the matching color and grain, but will also maximize the stability of the piece over time.

The total boardfootage of this set is 231. The wood is beautifully matched, rich in color and speckled with interesting character. Tons of potential!
